We will be starting Unit 2, "General Fiction" in October. This unit will encourage learners to explore the elements of general fiction genres through "Read Alouds", Reading Workshop and Guided Reading. We will learn how to analyze a fiction novel by monitoring for understanding, predicting and interpreting the elements of a text, with a specific focus on the characters.
Science/Social Studies
Our second Social Studies unit focuses on Civics, Government and Human Rights. We will continue our exploration of map skills with a focus on state names and capital cities. We will discuss how government leaders and citizens can work together to make their communities a better place to live. How are leaders elected? How did civil rights leaders inspire social change?
Math
We will be exploring how to use base-ten blocks to add and subtract three-digit numbers with and without regrouping, skip-counting by 5's, 10's and 100's, inverse operations of addition and subtraction, and continue building our math fact fluency and problem solving skills.
Writing Workshop
"Letter Writing" is our writing unit of study for this month. We will read mentor texts that help us to understand that letters are a form of communication. We will look at the components and format of a friendly letter, and write letters to our Principal, friends and family. We will learn how to stamp and address an envelope and get the opportunity to mail our letters.
Spelling
Our spelling unit for this month will focus on long and short vowel patterns. We will complete a Tic Tac Toe board each week. The activities are fun and easy to complete, but give us a choice in selecting activities that work best for us.
